Session 1: Agroforestry Center located on the campus of the University of Guelph.
Participants will hike through a 1 kilometer trail seeing over 20 different tree species as well as unique wildlife habitat. This stop will include a tour of a maple woodlot and modern maple syrup processing facility.
Session 2: Limerick Forest
Limerick Forest is a community forest that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council through the Eastern Ontario Model Forest – Forest Certification Program. Limerick is a 5788 hectare forest, owned and managed by the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. Conifer plantations (red pine, jack pine and white spruce), account for approximately 30% of the total area of Limerick Forest. The remainder of Limerick is comprised of second growth natural mixed wood forest and wetlands, in roughly equal proportions of 30% each. Participants will tour Limerick Forest seeing Forest Stewardship Council managed plantations, hardwood forests and wetland restoration projects.
Session 3: Barbeque lunch served at the Limerick Forest.
Session 4: See and discuss private land forestry in Ontario.
Taxation, land rights, timber sales, forest owner opportunities and challenges will be topics of discussion for the afternoon – the group will visit a privately owned woodlot that is also certified to the Principles and Criteria of the Forest Stewardship Council. This woodlot was harvested in the winter of 2007 and tolerant hardwood management methods will be discussed.
